I am lucky to be a hop skip and jump away from the Union Square Greenmarket..
(well technically a walk, train ride, and another walk away.. but that doesn’t have quite the same ring now does it?!)
I should go a lot more often than I do.. However when I do go it is such a special day for me! I could just spend hours getting lost in all of the amazing produce and beautiful flowers the farms offer there.. Everyone is so nice and every farm stand owner has a story! I urge you to go on a day when you have some free time and talk to the people at the stands.. They are some of the hardest working people out there and are responsible for a lot of what nourishes you and I daily!
My favorite time of the year to go is the end of the summer.. Stone fruit is in its full juicy amazing season, apples are starting to come around since fall is around the corner.. The flowers are gorgeous and the temperature outside isn’t unbearable!
I spent two hours there today, wandering around.. checking out all the stands before I did a second round to gather what I wanted!
The colors are spectacular.. It’s like everything there is in HD! The tomatoes are vibrant and firm, still smell like the vine.. The peaches are oozing juice and the strawberries.. well you can smell them from about 20 feet away!
Sometimes I find things I have never seen, like today.. Mexican Mini Gherkins.. They look like itty bitty baby watermelons! However they are baby cucumbers and MAN do they pack a flavor punch! Another great thing is a lot of the stands allow you to sample stuff before buying! (you should always ask first, obviously.. its polite 😉 )
Where else can you get 5 ears of corn for 2 bucks, fresh from the farm.. fresh-cut that morning?! It just warms my heart.. I literally spend 3/4 of the time I am there dreaming up what I will make as soon as I get home.. and I mean literally as soon as I get home! I bust into my house and start washing and cutting and cooking! Such inspiration all around the market.. The colors the smells.. the amazing herbs and micro herbs and edible flowers and UGH!!! Amazing.

Below is an heirloom tomato salad I made (30 seconds after I walked into my door haha) garnished with radish, micro cilantro, micro purple sprouts, sea salt and olive oil!
